About Mount Dora

Mount Dora, Florida 32757

Mount Dora, founded in 1874, is 25 miles northwest of Orlando and Walt Disney World.  Its current population is 11,564 an increase from the 9,000 of the 2000 census.

It is on Lake Dora in the rolling countryside characteristic of Florida's lakes region having an elevation of about 160 feet, one of the higher in the state.  Until the devastating freezes of the 1980's, Mount Dora, in common with most area municipalities, was primarily involved in citrus cultivation and processing.

Citrus farming has mostly relocated further south.  The city has revitalized itself as an arts center, both visual and performing, and tourist destination.  The main street is now replete with art galleries, boutique shops and restaurants.

Sometimes called "the festival city", Mount Dora hosts and sponsors a number of annual events ranging from a nationally acclaimed two day art festival, a crafts festival, a garden and plant festival, an antique festival, a bike (bicycles) week, a boat show, musical performances and literary events.  Nearly every weekend has the city prepared for one or another happening.
