Various Artists Whom Dr. Brown Admires.

Grant Wood (1891-1942).  American artist, participant in the regionalism movement of the 1930's.  Regionalism was "anti-Parisian," with the focus on American culture.  "Regional artists interpret...their hometown."  Wood's American Gothic is another American artistic icon.

Norman Rockwell (1894-1978).  In common with Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth, Rockwell blurs the line (if there is any) between illustrator and artist.  He primarily illustrated magazine covers and calendars with nostalgic paintings of American life and times.

Winslow Homer (1836-1910).  An American watercolor painter, Homer had no formal art training.  He was strictly representational.

James Whistler (1834-1903).  American born, Whistler lived in England.  His painting Whistler's Mother (1871, 57" X 64", oil on canvas) is another artistic icon, one that has been much parodied.
