Cartoons | Huglou.com: the art of Dr. Hugh Brown

Other Media | Cartoons

Dr. Brown's initial attempts at art involved copying cartoons from the newspaper comic pages starting when he was about four years old. Although, his art endeavors went in other directions, Dr. Brown never lost his appreciation of cartooning. Cartoon techniques are evident throughout his art work and he has occasionally drawn his own cartoons.

FIRST CARTOON

1943,  N/A,  N/A,  Catalogue# C01000

Dr. Brown's first published art work was a cartoon he drew at age ten years that appeared in a school paper:

LAB RATS AND TREADMILL

1990,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C02000

Inspired when the artist was regularly working out in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

PHYSICIAN AND CLOWN

2009,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C03000

Another spoof at physicians and their practice.

CHEMIST'S HYPOTHESIS

1967,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C04000

The artist remembers his days as a chemistry student.

PHYSICIANS WAITING ROOM

1985,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C05000

Busy practitioners and poor scheduling keep patients waiting inordinately long periods of time to be seen.am.

FAMOUS SHAKESPEARE LINE

2008,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C06000

A parody of Lady Macbeth's concern.

LAKE DORA LIGHT WATERCOLOR

2008,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C07000

The painting has been reproduced in so many different formats that the artist decided to go one step further (only in a cartoon that is).

PARODIES

2009,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C08000

With his version of Coolidge's poker playing dogs parodies, the artist was making a parody of those parodies. Substituting cats would carry it one step further.

INSPIRATION FOR SNOW SCENE PAINTING

2008,  6" X 6",  India Ink on 100lb Vellum,  Catalogue# C09000

The painting was inspired by a photo that appeared in an ad for Lamb's Naval Rum, a favorite in Canada. The cartoon makes fun of that inspiration.
